The new H1 regulations in New Zealand set minimum energy efficiency standards for constructing residential and commercial buildings nationwide. Since the introduction of the new standards, EnergySmart use the Calculation method to determine the most cost-effective way to meet building compliance. Savings can often be found in slab design and glazing which exceed the total cost of installed insulation. The ECO Insulation range of products has been tailor made to meet the new H1 requirements.

It is important designers and specifiers engage with EnergySmart pre-consent. Where ECO Insulation is likely to be installed, we are happy to provide an H1 design service to designers, specifiers and builders free of charge. Our service includes takes offs from plans, H1 optimisation to minimise the overall build cost of slab construction, glazing, wall frame depth and insulation. We provide an H1 compliance certificate which is recognised by consenting authorities. In the event and building consent has already been issued, more often than not, it is still worth contacting EnergySmart to optimise the H1 design and initiate a variation with the consenting authorities.

For designers who would rather do the take offs and H1 design themselves, EnergySmart has developed an optimisation tool that is free to use. EnergySmart shall soon make available, a full H1 calculator that shall be an extension to the optimisation tool currently available.

The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment are responsible for building standards in New Zealand and entered a consultation process in early 2025 to modify the H1 clause of the building code yet again.
